Alaskans turn out en masse to say no to Susitna Dam, yes to wild rivers, salmon, and folk music.
Wild Salmon Center staff joined a lively, salmon-friendly crowd in early August at Salmonfest on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula. This was the fourth incarnation of a festival started to rally support against the Pebble Mine, and festival goers were still happy to mix grooving with activism: we captured 300 signatures on postcards to Alaska Gov. Bill Walker, asking him to cancel the Susitna Dam and work instead on fish-friendly hydroelectric projects. Organizers counted 6,000 festivalgoers, who were treated to the sounds of headliner Emmylou Harris. Check out our gallery below, or view our photos on Facebook.
